Two similarly named types of leave can produce very different household budgets. Parent’s Leave and Parental Leave have different time limits and payment arrangements. A workplace policy may add another layer, but it does not merge the schemes.
We compared the Workplace Relations Commission’s current explanations and built a three-record method: identify the statutory leave, check any State payment separately, then check the employment contract. This is a planning tool, rather than a decision on an individual application.
Which leave are you asking for?
The WRC’s Parent’s Leave guidance describes nine weeks for each relevant parent within the first two years after birth or placement for adoption. It can be taken in individual weeks or blocks. It is separate from maternity, paternity and adoptive leave, which need their own applications.
The WRC’s Parental Leave explanation, updated in May 2026, describes up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave for each eligible child. It generally has to be taken before age 12, or 16 for a child with a disability or long-term illness. Normally a year’s continuous service is required, with limited exceptions. Taking it as individual days or hours requires the employer’s agreement.
The words on the application therefore matter. “I want parental time off” leaves the employer and employee discussing an unclear request.
Time off is not the same as income
For Parent’s Leave, the WRC explains that a Department of Social Protection payment depends on sufficient PRSI contributions. That is a separate question from entitlement to the leave itself. Do not treat approval of one application as confirmation of the other.
Parental Leave is described as unpaid. An employer’s enhanced family policy may provide additional support, so ask payroll what the contract actually promises rather than assuming a State payment or full wages.
For budgeting, make three entries: dates absent; State benefit applied for and confirmed; employer pay or top-up confirmed. Leave unconfirmed amounts blank. This prevents the same expected payment being counted twice.
Put dates into the correct request
Parent’s Leave requires a written request to the employer at least six weeks before the proposed start, specifying dates, duration and how it will be taken. The WRC describes restricted grounds and procedures for postponement; it is not an unrestricted power to refuse leave.
Before committing to childcare changes, keep the employer’s written response, check the separate benefit route and resolve any uncertainty about service or the child’s age with the WRC. The useful comparison is the scheme and its conditions, not simply which headline number of weeks is larger.
