An autumn heating checklist should include both a carbon-monoxide alarm and the servicing of fuel-burning appliances. Gas Networks Ireland says an alarm provides added protection alongside regular attention to appliances, vents, flues and chimneys. Installing a detector does not replace that maintenance. [1]

Its guidance calls for gas appliances to be installed correctly and serviced annually by a Registered Gas Installer. For other fuels, use a qualified service agent for the relevant appliance and fuel. Keep vents clear, and arrange appropriate chimney and flue maintenance rather than blocking an opening to address a draught. [1]

Record the alarm’s instructions and life

GNI advises choosing an audible alarm complying with EN 50291, with CE and independent-certification markings and an end-of-life indicator. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. It recommends monthly testing and replacement at the end of the device’s life. [1]

A useful household record can bring together the model, instructions, installation or replacement date and the next test reminder. Keep appliance-service details beside it, with the qualified provider’s contact route. That makes it easier to identify which task is due without opening or adjusting the appliance.

A successful test-button check is not a professional assessment of a boiler, fire or flue. Do not dismantle a detector or attempt fuel, gas or electrical repairs as part of this checklist.

An alarm sounding requires action

The national carbon-monoxide advice site directs people to ventilate, stop using fuel-burning appliances and get everyone into fresh air if an alarm sounds. Appliances need a qualified check before reuse. If poisoning is suspected, get fresh air immediately and seek urgent medical help; do not stay indoors troubleshooting the detector. [2]

Read the full official emergency advice in advance, while there is time to make a household plan. This is general prevention guidance, not a diagnosis, property inspection or a claim that an alarm alone makes an installation safe.
