A payment change announced on 7 October 2026 gives passengers on TFI Local Link regular rural services in Wexford another way to buy a single journey. Transport for Ireland says debit and credit cards and digital wallets, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, are now accepted on the services covered by the rollout. [1]
The important distinction is between a payment method and a fare product. The announcement limits contactless to single-journey fares. Daily and weekly products remain available through the Leap website and TFI Leap Top-Up App. Cash, Leap cards and eligible Free Travel Cards remain options. It does not announce one universal bank-card system for every bus in Ireland. [1]
Identify the service before choosing payment
Local Link Wexford’s website separates regular rural timetables from pre-booked demand-responsive services. The contactless announcement concerns the former. Check the actual route and service type rather than assuming any vehicle with a Local Link name has identical booking and payment arrangements. [1][2]
The operator asks passengers on pre-booked services to book by 3pm on the previous day. That booking instruction is separate from the introduction of card payment; a convenient payment method does not reserve a place or remove a booking requirement. [2]
For a return trip or repeated journeys, identify the product you need before boarding. Ask the operator which channel sells it if the online information is unclear. The announcement does not establish that paying with a bank card automatically produces a Leap discount or a daily cap.
Leave a workable fallback
If you intend to use a phone wallet, make sure you can access it and have enough battery for the journey. Have an accepted alternative available where practical, and keep any payment record needed to explain a problem to the operator. Do not send card security details to an unsolicited message claiming to resolve a transport payment.
The useful change is greater choice for the announced single fares. Timetable checks, pre-booking where required and choosing the right ticket remain separate tasks. This guide does not confirm a particular departure’s availability or calculate the cheapest fare for an individual passenger.
