Founders considering New Frontiers in Waterford have a practical decision to make before submitting an application: can they give the business six months of full-time attention? SETU's current calendar lists 23 October 2026 as the Phase 2 application deadline, with the programme running from 1 December 2026 to 31 May 2027. It says dates are subject to change. [1]

That creates a useful window to assess the opportunity rather than simply complete a form. An application deadline and a programme start date are different milestones; the plan needs to work for both.

Match the programme to the business you are building

New Frontiers is funded and managed by Enterprise Ireland and delivered locally through third-level institutions. Its national FAQ describes support for innovative, early-stage businesses, with part-time Phase 1 and full-time Phase 2. [4]

SETU says its programme does not take equity. It lists mentoring, peer learning, workspace and preparation for investment pitching among the Phase 2 supports. [1] These can help a founder develop a business, but they do not establish that customers will buy the product or that an investor will fund it.

Write down the customer problem, who experiences it and what you have learned from testing the idea. Separate observations from assumptions. A useful application can explain what remains uncertain and how the programme would help investigate it, rather than presenting every part of the business as settled.

Treat time as a resource alongside money

SETU describes full-time engagement and participation as a requirement for ongoing Phase 2 funding. [1] Before applying, map the programme dates against employment, caring responsibilities, travel and any existing customer commitments. Ask the team what attendance, review meetings and work between sessions will involve.

Then prepare a household and business budget for the period. Keep expected personal support separate from product-development costs, professional fees and other business spending. Do not build a cash-flow plan around a place or payment you have not been offered.

Confirm the support terms directly

SETU's FAQ lists a €17,500 Phase 2 allowance subject to satisfactory performance. [2] The current calendar describes monthly stipend payments for full-time participation. [1] Ask the programme team to confirm the payment schedule and conditions applying to this intake before building a budget around the allowance.

Previous funding also matters. SETU's eligibility guidance says applicants must disclose funding received or applied for, including relevant co-founder funding. It explains that some earlier supports can affect stipend eligibility. [3] Gather the actual award letters and application details so the team can assess the situation accurately.

This is a reason to ask specific questions, rather than assume that all startup supports can be combined. The article cannot determine an individual founder's eligibility.

Phase 1 and Phase 2 are separate application questions

The Waterford page currently says Phase 1 applications are closed while providing an application link for Phase 2. [1] The national FAQ says completing Phase 1 is not compulsory before applying to Phase 2, although it recommends the earlier phase. [4] Do not rule yourself out solely because you missed the autumn Phase 1 deadline; discuss your development stage with the local team.

SETU lists Waterford contact numbers 051 302953 and 051 302949 and the Xcelerate Centre at its West Campus in Carriganore. [5] Use the official programme pages and contact details to confirm the closing time, documents required and current timetable. Keep a copy of the submitted application and any confirmation you receive.
