Wainfest starts across Donegal on Saturday, 10 October 2026 and runs until 18 October. This year marks the children’s arts and book festival’s 30th anniversary. Donegal County Council’s 1 October announcement describes more than 100 activities across libraries, schools, community spaces and cultural venues. A countywide programme does not mean every event is open to families without an arrangement. [1][2]
The organiser separates family events from school events. Its family page states that online bookings close 18 hours before activities, while inviting people to telephone libraries on the morning to ask about remaining availability. A closed online button therefore needs a different next step; it is not evidence that a place has been reserved or that admission is guaranteed. [3]
Follow the booking route for that activity
The family listings direct readers to library booking pages as well as theatre, cinema and other venue arrangements. Some activities have different entry instructions. Read the individual listing and use its named contact rather than assuming one festival-wide booking system covers everything. [3]
For a child, begin with the activity’s age range, location and length. Then check whether an adult needs a separate place, whether siblings can attend and what access or sensory information the venue can provide. If a detail is missing, ask the organiser; a promotional picture cannot answer it.
Leave space for the child’s choice
The council’s programme overview includes storytelling, science, crafts, gaming and creative work such as sewing and 3D printing. Schools have their own workshops and author sessions. These are different types of participation, so choosing by a child’s interest is more useful than trying to fill every available slot. [1]
Keep the confirmation and venue directions together, and decide how to get home before leaving. If the first choice is unavailable, look for a genuinely suitable alternative rather than treating a different age group’s session as interchangeable.
This guide was checked on opening day. It does not confirm remaining places, review performances or claim attendance. Recheck the official family listing when booking, especially if the online cutoff has already passed.
