Tipperary County Council published its Winter Service Plan for 2026–2027 on 9 October. For road users, one of its clearest messages is that a route’s treatment priority does not establish whether it is safe at the moment of travel. The plan tells drivers to proceed on the assumption that winter treatment has not been provided. [1][2]

Its priority system distinguishes essential routes, routes included in ordinary winter service that may face interruptions in severe conditions, and lower-priority routes receiving occasional treatment when resources permit. During extreme weather, Priority 1 takes precedence over Priority 2. Priority 3 is outside normal winter treatment. [2]

Check the complete journey

The plan includes a priority map and a schedule of roads in its appendices. Use the current document to locate the relevant road numbers rather than relying on a previous winter’s recollection. A main route’s inclusion does not tell you about every road used to reach it. [2]

Write down the journey’s different stages: the departure road, connecting route, destination access and any walking section. That makes gaps in your information visible. The map describes a service plan; it is not a live record confirming that a gritter has just passed your entrance.

Put current advice ahead of assumptions

The Road Safety Authority directs travellers to weather, road and local-authority updates, and asks people to consider delaying unnecessary journeys in extreme conditions. It also advises checking vehicle lights, wipers and tyres and taking particular care on icy walking surfaces. Consult updates before departure; do not use a phone while driving. [3]

Prepare a way to change arrangements if travel becomes unsafe, including notifying the person expecting you. The same household plan can cover a different departure time or a decision to postpone.

This is preparation advice drawn from published guidance. It does not report an active ice warning, certify a road condition or promise that a named route will be clear on a particular morning.
