State Pension and Fuel Allowance answer different questions. A pension provides retirement income under contribution or means-tested rules; Fuel Allowance helps an eligible household with heating costs during a defined season. Receiving one does not, by itself, establish entitlement to the other.

For anyone checking a payment this October, the distinction also matters when reading Budget 2027 announcements: a future increase is different from the rate currently payable.

How much is the State Pension now?

The Department of Social Protection’s State Pension Contributory guidance gives a maximum personal weekly rate of €299.30. This is the standard maximum at age 66, before the age-80 increase or any additions. The personal pension is not means-tested: the contribution record and other relevant circumstances determine the award, and reduced rates can apply.

People born in 1958 or later can choose to start their contributory pension between ages 66 and 70. Later starting ages can attract higher rates. This is a choice with individual consequences, rather than a reason to assume everyone should defer claiming.

The separate State Pension Non-Contributory guidance sets out a means-tested route for people aged 66 or over who are legally and habitually resident in Ireland. Its maximum personal weekly rate is €288 for ages 66–79 and €298 from age 80. The means assessment can result in a lower payment.

These are personal rates, not a prediction of a household’s total income. Additions and other payments have their own conditions.

Check the record before applying

The official MyWelfare State Pension service lets applicants apply for either or both pension types. If someone qualifies for both, the department awards the higher payment; they do not receive two full State Pensions.

MyWelfare recommends checking the contribution record for missing employment information and considering the relevant pension caring supports before submitting an application. Work abroad and time spent caring can require additional checks, so a simple count of years in a job is not a reliable award calculation.

Online applications require a verified MyGovID account. The department recommends applying six months before the intended contributory-pension start date, or six months before turning 66 for the non-contributory pension. Paper application routes are linked from the individual scheme pages for people unable to use the online service.

Who can qualify for Fuel Allowance?

The department’s current Fuel Allowance page states a rate of €38 a week now. The 2026–27 season runs for 28 weeks, from the week beginning 28 September 2026 to 9 April 2027. Only one allowance is paid per household.

People aged 66 or over do not have to receive a qualifying welfare payment, but the residence, means and household conditions still apply. Under-66 applicants generally need a qualifying payment as well as meeting the other conditions. A pension award should therefore prompt a separate Fuel Allowance check, rather than an assumption that heating support follows automatically.

The Fuel Allowance operational guidelines explain why the household details matter. For applicants aged 66 or over, the means assessment includes the applicant and any spouse, civil partner or cohabitant. Other people living in the home must fit the relevant household rules. Savings, other property and disregarded income require the scheme’s assessment; a bank balance alone does not settle entitlement.

Applying and keeping a claim correct

Use the application route on the Fuel Allowance service page. Some Intreo-administered payments cannot use the online application. Working Family Payment recipients are assessed through their own scheme and should follow its instructions rather than send a duplicate Fuel Allowance application.

Existing recipients generally do not need to apply again each season while their circumstances remain unchanged. Changes in address, household members or payment circumstances should be reported. Weekly payment and two-instalment options exist, but instalments are not available on every qualifying scheme. Contact the office responsible for the claim about its payment arrangements or a decision that needs review.

What Budget 2027 has announced

The department’s Budget 2027 measures announce a €10 rise in maximum weekly State Pension rates from January 2027 and a €5 rise in Fuel Allowance to €43 from 1 January 2027. These are future announced changes, not the amounts payable on 21 October 2026.

For a practical check today, identify the pension type and personal rate first, then check the separate household heating-support rules. The department decides individual claims; this guide explains the public routes without determining anyone’s entitlement.
