Athy’s Shackleton Autumn School returns from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October, with an expanded programme of free public activities alongside the school’s separately booked sessions. For visitors, the main planning task is to work out which kind of event they are choosing before paying or travelling. [1][2]

Kildare County Council’s 12 October announcement describes a wider festival including music, storytelling, exhibitions, family activities and a town-centre cultural programme. [1] That does not make every lecture, workshop, museum visit or other event across the weekend free: check the specific listing and what a ticket includes.

The school programme

The organiser’s published schedule lists Friday’s formal opening for 7:30pm and a Cherry Pickings book launch at 8pm. The related exhibition draws on books, photographs and letters from the Apsley Cherry-Garrard collection. Friday morning masterclasses are confined to school students. [2]

Those distinctions matter if you are arranging a family outing. A workshop appearing in the weekend programme is not necessarily a public drop-in session. Nor does the time of the evening opening establish when every Friday activity begins.

Saturday’s advertised talks range from women’s participation in Antarctic expeditions to the Polar Academy and expedition artist George Marston. Sunday’s programme includes Discovery, early polar photography and an examination of Shackleton’s leadership. The school also lists museum access for its ticket-holders over the weekend. [2]

Choose a theme that interests you, then check its room, start time and admission terms. A single-day visit with one clear focus can be easier to organise than assuming an entire weekend pass is necessary for a first encounter with polar history.

Check the current booking total

The programme page still displays an early-bird €225 offer that explicitly ended on 31 August. [2] It is expired and should not be treated as today’s price. Use the official booking link to check the available ticket types, final cost and any conditions before purchase. [4]

Some Sunday afternoon choices are described as weather-dependent or limited in numbers, with times to be announced on the day. [2] Do not build a tightly timed return journey around an activity whose finish has not been confirmed. Ask the organiser which parts require a separate reservation and whether your preferred option is included in your ticket.

Plan the visit, including access

The Shackleton Experience is in the historic Town Hall on Emily Square, R14 KW65. Its visitor information describes a rear lift and access for wheelchair users, prams and strollers. [3] Check the arrangements for each additional festival venue as well; a museum’s access statement does not cover every building in town.

Save the current programme and booking confirmation together, check your return transport and allow time between activities. The autumn-school schedule is event-specific: ordinary museum opening hours are not a substitute for the instructions attached to a special weekend booking.
