A national school-holiday list is only one part of a family’s calendar. Primary and post-primary February breaks differ, summer dates are not standardised, and some contingency arrangements can shorten a break.
We read the Department of Education’s current circular and separated fixed dates from choices that need confirmation with the school. The dates below are for the 2026–27 school year, not a prediction of weather-related closures.
October and Christmas
The Department’s school holiday information points to Circular 0018/2026 for the 2026–27 to 2028–29 years. Its 2026–27 appendix specifies the October mid-term break from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026 inclusive.
All schools close for Christmas on Tuesday 22 December 2026, the final school day, and reopen on Wednesday 6 January 2027. Distinguish the final attendance day from the first full day of the holiday when arranging care or travel.
February is not identical for every school
Primary schools close on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 February 2027. They may extend this to the full week, Monday 15 to Friday 19 February, using three discretionary days, subject to the circular’s contingency provisions.
Post-primary schools have the full Monday 15 to Friday 19 February break unless contingency arrangements apply. Under those arrangements, schools may remain open up to and including Wednesday 17 February; Thursday and Friday remain closed.
A primary-school calendar showing two days off and another showing five can therefore both reflect the national framework. Check the actual calendar rather than assuming one is incorrect.
Easter and the contingency distinction
The standard final school day before Easter is Friday 19 March 2027, with reopening on Monday 5 April. Where contingency arrangements are required, the circular allows a school to remain open up to and including Wednesday 24 March.
These provisions concern making up unforeseen lost tuition days. They are not evidence that a particular school has already activated a shorter holiday. The circular requires schools to publish their calendar and contingency arrangements on their website.
Mark each diary entry by its source
Use three labels: national circular, local school calendar, and contingency change. Save the current school notice beside any local date, especially where siblings attend different schools.
The Department says summer opening and closing dates are not standardised. Primary schools must meet 182 teaching days and post-primary schools 166, but those totals do not produce one nationwide summer departure date. Confirm local dates before making non-refundable arrangements, and check subsequent school messages for changes.
