If you have been meaning to explore your local library, joining is a practical first step. It puts a real local resource behind your next reading idea and gives you a place to ask questions.
Membership is free
Libraries Ireland says public library membership is free for everyone and that people can join at any age. Children and young people under 18 need a parent or guardian’s permission. [1]
You can complete an application online or in person. An online applicant must visit a library with photographic identification and proof of current address to finalise membership and get a card. Your card and PIN are used for borrowing and accessing relevant services. Membership lasts one year and can be renewed. [1]
Ask what is available in your branch
Start with what you would actually use: a book you have been looking for, a place to browse or information about online services. Ask staff how reservations work and whether any service you are interested in requires a booking.
Do not assume every branch has the same facilities or timetable. Check your own branch before planning a visit, especially if you need an accessible route or a particular resource.
Make it easy to come back
Keep the branch link and catalogue address somewhere convenient. Protect your PIN rather than writing it on the card. A reminder to check return dates can make borrowing less stressful.
A library habit can be as small as one visit a month and one book you would not otherwise have found. You do not need an ambitious reading target to begin.
