An Irish passport application is easier to plan when you separate the steps: confirm the appropriate application route, assemble the documents it requires, complete any witnessing and allow time for processing and delivery. Paying for an online application does not mean that all the evidence has arrived or that a passport is ready to issue.
Start with the official Passport Online information page. The Passport Service describes it as its fastest application method, available worldwide for adult and child passports and passport cards. Follow its application link rather than assuming a search advertisement or a message asking for payment is the official service.
Check citizenship before choosing a passport route
The Department’s citizenship guidance distinguishes citizenship from applying for the travel document. For some people born abroad, entry on the Foreign Births Register must come before a passport application. A passport form does not replace a citizenship process that is still required.
Use the official route for the applicant’s circumstances. This guide does not determine anyone’s nationality or entitlement; questions about a particular family history or document should go to the Passport Service or the relevant citizenship authority.
First application, renewal or changed details?
The adult documentary requirements separate renewals, lost or damaged documents, changes of information and first applications. The documents differ, including by place of birth and current residence. Do not use somebody else’s renewal checklist for a first application.
For example, the section for an adult first applicant born on the island of Ireland and now resident in Ireland lists an identity-verification form, a full original civil birth certificate, separate proof of name and address, and identification requirements. Additional evidence can apply. Treat that as one specified route, not a universal list for everyone.
Read the matching section before posting valuable originals. Follow the form’s instructions on which originals or copies are required and where to send them. Keep your application reference and a record of what you have sent. The right name, date and photograph must match the application, rather than an assumed shortened version used informally.
Arrange witnessing and a child’s consent properly
The Passport Service’s witnessing guide says first-time adult online applicants resident in Ireland need a Garda to sign the Identity Verification Form, which is printed at the end of the online process. Applicants resident abroad should follow its country-of-residence and approved-witness instructions.
Children have a separate process. The child documentary requirements and witnessing guidance explain identity and guardian-consent forms. Check the official instructions where a guardian cannot consent; do not guess how a complex guardianship situation should be documented. The service also warns that an unreachable witness can delay an application.
What does it cost?
The official fee page, checked on 18 October 2026, lists a standard adult ten-year passport at €75 through Passport Online and a standard five-year passport for a child under 18 at €20. It lists an additional €5 postal charge for a child application and a €15 postal charge for applicants resident outside Ireland; for a child resident abroad, the single postal payment is €15.
Check the actual product and residence-related charges before paying. A passport-card bundle, a paper route and an urgent appointment have different fees; the basic online book price is not a quote for every service.
How long should you allow?
The current turnaround page, checked on 18 October, lists average processing times of 10 working days for a simple adult renewal, 15 for a complex adult renewal or child renewal, and 20 for a first-time online application.
These are working-day averages, not guaranteed delivery dates. Where supporting documents are required, the clock starts when the Passport Service receives them; further evidence requests can lengthen the process. Postal delivery time is additional. Recheck the live page when applying and use the official tracker for the application’s status.
First-time applications cannot be expedited, and the service advises against booking travel before the passport arrives. Do not turn a published average into a flight-booking deadline. Allow for the evidence stage as well as printing and delivery.
Paper forms and urgent travel need the current instructions
The service’s updates page, last updated on 13 October 2026, says the old green APS1/APS2 forms stopped being accepted from 1 December 2025 and directs people needing a paper application to Passport Assist. It also says first-time applications cannot use an urgent appointment. Follow the current service links rather than an old downloaded form.
That page warns about fraudulent emails and texts seeking personal or banking information. If a message looks suspicious, use the official contact route independently. The Press does not collect passport details or process applications.
