Ireland’s 2026–27 Winter Vaccination Programme opened on 8 October, with the HSE announcing flu and COVID-19 vaccination through participating GPs and pharmacies. For a household preparing for winter, the useful first step is to find the official guidance for each vaccine and confirm the local booking arrangements. [1]

This guide concerns access to information and appointments. It does not decide which vaccine, product or timing is appropriate for an individual; those questions belong with the relevant healthcare professional.

Read the flu and COVID-19 information separately

The HSE’s launch announcement recommends both vaccines for people aged 60 or over and for certain people with underlying conditions or weakened immunity. It separately recommends the flu vaccine for healthcare workers, pregnant women and children aged 2 to 17. [1]

Those are different recommendations. Do not transfer a flu eligibility category to COVID-19 by assumption. Use the current HSE information and discuss any uncertainty about your own circumstances with a GP or pharmacist.

The flu guidance includes a fuller list of groups eligible for a free vaccine and links to separate COVID-19 information. It advises people who are unsure about a long-term condition to speak with a GP or pharmacist. [2] Keep the direct official link rather than relying on an undated screenshot or a list from a previous winter.

Ask the provider about the appointment

The programme announcement says vaccination is free for eligible people and may be available at the same appointment. It also describes HSE teams providing vaccination in residential care and for housebound people. [1] These routes do not mean every provider has the same booking system or appointment availability.

Before travelling, ask a participating GP or pharmacy which service they provide, whether a booking is required and what information they need beforehand. If you are arranging access for someone else, involve them in the conversation and ask the provider how to handle any relevant support or consent arrangements.

Write down the date, location and contact number once an appointment is confirmed. Mention access needs when booking, rather than leaving them until arrival. If arrangements change, contact the provider through its established details.

Keep clinical questions for the vaccinator

The HSE’s flu page contains important guidance about circumstances that require professional advice. [2] Share relevant medical history and questions directly with the healthcare professional. Do not change medicines or infer suitability from this article.

For help finding the official information route, HSE Live lists 1800 700 700, with hours of 8am–8pm Monday to Friday and 9am–5pm Saturday; Sundays and bank holidays are closed. [2] The service information can help with navigation, while the vaccinator addresses individual clinical questions.
