Applying for a Personal Public Service number in Ireland involves more than opening an online account. The current MyWelfare PPS-number service says residents must also attend an appointment. The number is issued after further checks, rather than immediately at that appointment.

Treat the process as preparation, an online application and appointment, then the department’s decision. That helps distinguish a booking confirmation from confirmation that a number has been allocated.

Check whether you already have a number

MyWelfare says to check for an existing number before applying again. An Irish payslip or Revenue or Social Protection letter may contain it. Ask the relevant official office if you cannot find it.

Starting a job can provide a reason to need a number; simply looking for work does not. State the actual reason for applying.

Prepare identity, address and reason evidence

The Department of Social Protection’s application guidance requires evidence of identity, address and why the number is needed. Identity-document requirements differ by the applicant’s circumstances, so use the relevant section rather than assuming one passport or certificate list covers everyone.

The department says address evidence should show the applicant’s name and address and be no more than three months old. Examples include a utility bill, bank statement or tenancy agreement. It also describes an option for someone staying with friends or relatives: an original household bill with a note from the bill holder confirming residence.

Use the department’s guidance to prepare, then follow the document list provided for your own appointment. If a document does not match your circumstances, ask the official team how to proceed rather than substituting an unrelated document or changing its details.

Complete the online and appointment stages

A basic MyGovID account is required. MyWelfare asks for personal details and the reason, provides a document list and lets applicants book an appointment. Its notification confirms the location, time and documents. Children being registered through this process also attend.

Keep that notification with your preparation notes. Before travelling, compare the location and document list with what you have gathered. A general article cannot confirm that an individual set of documents will be accepted or promise a processing date.

Use the route for your circumstances

The department has separate guidance for children and applicants abroad. People recently arriving from Ukraine under the EU Temporary Protection Directive are directed to allocation centres instead of the ordinary online application. Check the relevant section.

Protect the information you submit

The official MyWelfare security guidance warns that fake messages can lead to websites designed to imitate MyWelfare or MyGovID. It says MyWelfare will not send a text or email linking directly to a page asking you to confirm personal or financial information.

Open the genuine service yourself and check the address before signing in. Keep application documents and account credentials private. The Press does not process PPS applications and does not need your number, identity documents or login details.
